The Hidden Red Dyes in Your Everyday Products
WELLNESS

Artificial red dyes like INS 122, INS 124, INS 127, and INS 129 are petroleum-based chemicals that don't occur naturally. While they're banned in the US, Europe, and Australia due to health concerns, including links to hyperactivity in children, cancer risks, and allergic reactions, these same dyes are commonly found in Indian products.
Where You'll Find These Red Dyes
Milkshakes & Beverages
That Instagram-worthy pink milkshake? Check the label, it probably contains these synthetic dyes to achieve that perfect colour. Throughout my childhood I might have had Rasna, it used to be a staple drink for anyone who came home. It's probably time we spread awareness. Many packaged fruit juices use artificial colors to make them look more "natural" and appealing.

Paper Boat Swing Zesty Pomegranate Juice - INS122, INS124
Sting Energy Drink - INS129

Chocolates
Gems has always been my favourite, but little did I know the backstory. Many colourful chocolates and candies rely on these artificial reds for their vibrant appearance. Check any colourful chocolates for any hidden synthetic food colours.

Syrups & Jams
Strawberry syrups and bright red jams often use these dyes to enhance their "natural" look.

Yogurt
This is probably one of those categories that shocked me. So many popular brands made it to this list. Flavoured yoghurts, especially strawberry and cherry varieties, frequently contain artificial red colouring. Check the label before you buy it, although not all flavoured yoghurt contains artificial colours.

Jelly & Bubblegum
These childhood favourites are often loaded with synthetic dyes that create those eye-catching colours. Please don't fall for products that use artificial colours to attract consumers.

Ice Cream
Cherry, strawberry, red velvet, rainbow and other red-tinted flavourings commonly use these banned dyes.

Biscuits
Colourful cookies and cream-filled biscuits often contain these artificial colours. These popular biscuits are favourites among kids and adults, but make sure they don't become a daily indulgence.

Toothpaste
Surprisingly, even some toothpaste uses red dyes for colouring.

Final thought
Please take a moment to carefully review the ingredient labels. If the list is too long or contains unpronounceable chemicals, it's probably best to skip it. Your health is worth more than a pretty colour!
